“The richness I achieve comes from Nature, the source of my inspiration.” Claude Monet
Driving through Monet’s gardens in Giverny, France, visitors know exactly why he expressed those words:acres of flowers, trees, water; all exemplified through his remarkable paintings. A fortunate group of Southern Californians, who are also drawn to the beauty of nature, have discovered a gem in the foothills of the mountains: Hidden Valley Estates. Beyond the massive gates, simple ranch fencing is strewn with trailing roses, for half a mile. Open another set of gates and you’ll find it; an ode to nature, an ode to beauty. The backyard is a fantasy, with both flagstone, hardscape and grass. A pergola runs across the back of the home, a serene spot to gaze at the waterfall spilling into the pool and spa. Beyond is an oversized gazebo with fireplace and grill; a perfect outdoor living room. The side yard is an exquisite rose garden, complete with birdbath.
The interior spaces only get better! A large kitchen, with bead board ceiling, un-honed travertine floors, Viking dishwasher, 6-burner stove and oven, Sub-Zero fridge and vast island lies adjacent to the charming breakfast area. The flawless hardwood floors in the other living areas are a testament to the skill of Richard Marshall floor designs. The dining room, with wine alcove and magnificent coffered ceiling overlooks yet another patio, as does the formal sitting room. A family room, with a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and custom built-ins, faces the pool. The most exciting room on this side of the home, however, has to be the former library, now converted to an English tavern, with sink, beer tap and two-sided fireplace, all paneled in gorgeous oak; the ultimate, sophisticated “man cave”! The other end of the first level has a powder room, large laundry room with sink and built-ins and a sunny guest room, with en suite bath and walk-in closet.
Two staircases lead to the second level, one to the master suite, the other to guest rooms. The two substantial guest rooms have custom, walk-in closets and full baths, both facing a stunning oak tree grove. Also on this end of the floor is a meticulously designed media room: six leather lounge chairs, a refreshment bar with sink and microwave, full bath and walk-in closet. This could easily be converted into another guest room. The second stair case leads to a true sanctuary, flawless in execution: an inviting balcony overlooking the back patio, separate exercise room (which could also be a handsome study), two vast closets, impeccably customized and a bathroom with everything; soaking tub, coffee bar, vanity; a glamorous escape! This estate is a fulfilment for those who treasure the splendor of the outdoors combined with refined living. The one who will capture this gem is not the one who dreams a life, but one who decides to live that dream.
