Thousand Oaks incorporated in 1964 for a specific reason: to stop Los Angeles from becoming it. The city’s founders wanted to preserve the rolling oak-studded hills and establish a community that would grow on its own terms. The name is literal – thousands of native valley oaks were already here, and the planning ordinances that followed were written to keep them.
