“California sunset going down in the West
All the colors in the sky kiss another day goodbye.”
Neil Young
Neil Young must have been sitting on the balcony of this Malibou Lake home when he wrote those words, this dedication to beautiful California, which is personified in a 1930’s home, restored to its original, tantalizing character. It takes only a drive through this gated community, every home unique, every bend in the road a surprise, families strolling on lakeside paths – to fall in love with such a quintessential neighborhood.
Although all of the houses lie on or near the water, this home, facing south on a promontory, has unobstructed views of the entire length of the lake, from the dam to the volcanic rock formations at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains. The landscaping on the property is awesome: dozens of fruit trees; several tiers of gardens in the back, along with a greenhouse; secluded courtyards, with intimate dining and lounging areas; fountains, as well as a private dock. Nothing is missing!
The second level of the home opens to a massive great room facing the lake, with a wide-hearth fireplace, vaulted ceilings, and rare Australian Cypress wood floors. A 12-foot zebra-wood
bar divides the living area from the kitchen, which has a Thermador, 6-burner stove, and stunning emerald-green granite countertops. Somehow the owners have shrewdly married the charm of the home’s 1930’s personality with 21st century comforts – claw foot bathtub, showers and traditional Nanucket style wrap-around porches serving as outdoor living quarters eight months of the year. The master bedroom faces the lake, French doors opening to a sun-filled porch, wooing us with the lush setting. Two guest rooms and a bath lie on the opposite end of the house, along with a walk-in pantry and laundry room.
The first level boasts a charming one-bedroom apartment, with the original Douglas fir floors, kitchen with bar, and full bath. This floor also has sweeping views of the lake, and still another wraparound porch.
This inviting jewel is welcoming its new owners with open arms…….don’t miss that next sunset!
“Land of beauty, space and light…….Land of promise, land of might
You’re my home now and it’s true…California, here’s to you.”
