“As Hansel and Gretel walked deeper into the woods, they saw in the middle of a sparkling glade, a pretty little cottage, built entirely of gingerbread, candy, cake, and sugar.”
Hansel & Gretel, 1812
As children, many of us were intrigued by this German folk tale, and even now, Gingerbread Houses continue to be built, reminiscent of this charming style: winding paths, gable roofs, and stone fireplaces. Visitors driving by the Malibou Lake homes can sometimes find examples of this, with one in particular having many of the cottage traits of long ago, along with modern luxuries families now enjoy.
Walking up the slate pathway, through an arched-stone entry with green picket fence, makes people feel they are back in the early 1900’s, as they might well be, since this is one of the lake’s original homes, with its massive log beams, original Douglas fir flooring, and adobe fireplace, its wide, hearth inviting us to enjoy the cozy fire.
Yes, the large, open kitchen has plentiful knotty pine cupboards similar to those of the “early days,” but the old and the new fit beautifully, with cork flooring and stainless steel appliances guaranteed to make any aspiring chef beam! The stainless, double-sink looks out to a stunning view of the Santa Monica mountains, which will have anyone willing to do the day’s dishes. A guest bath was recently remodeled on the first floor with a claw foot tub.
A lovely staircase leads to the loft, offering a myriad of possibilities: playroom, media area, game room. All of the second-floor rooms have exceptional fir flooring, and the master bedroom, with its unique, vaulted ceiling and mountain views, looks like a treehouse in the sky. The bathroom has a shower and large vanity with a great walk-in closet. The office, with French doors leading to a deck, also looks out to the mountains and island.
The large lot has a great, south-facing picture of the water, a private dock site location, a separate viewing deck, and hot tub. Residents’ member benefits include: fishing, boating, swimming, and tennis – and don’t forget the rope swing on the island! This is the only home on Malibou Lake that is listed under a million dollars, but has a multi-million dollar location.
Now is the perfect time to make your own memories in the “pretty little cottage in the middle of a sparkling glade,” in matchless Malibou Lake!
